An Open Memo to Obama Communications Staff
Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 07:29:52 AM PDT
The Jeremiah Wright spectacle brings with it a poisonous, yet engraved invitation for Obama to hop right in the sewer. And surely you hear the clamor from many to step right in...We Dems are all so freaked about John Kerry's lack of rapid response to '04 Swiftboat attacks that it would now have some of us run off as Chicken Little, while others reach for the cudgel.
We Democrats have bemoaned a history of wooden candidates, or the appearance of such.
Yet This candidate and these times ARE different, and yes, The American Bullshit Meter is more finely tuned and will work just fine if one speaks directly into it.
Obama needs to pounce on the politics of distraction, division and personal destruction, reminding the electorate that, in fact , WE KNOW better than this, We FEEL it while struggling to keep up.
It is the very basis of Barack's campaign. Anyone think that a protracted discussion of religion will satisfy his critics? Or the Media? Or serve Obama???? Does anyone seriously believe Obama would be accepted by the John Hagees of the world??? What to DO, Then? What to SAY?
This must be seen as test to see if Obama is "all that", if he can stay on course...
So stay on message:
Wright doesn't speak for me, he doesn't speak for the campaign.
I know, I know.
You, like many of us, are looking for a transition point.
Something that is both true and politically effective. So Here it is:
I am a Christian. And like all people of good faith,
I love my Lord, my faith, and my congregation, as does my wife and kids.
People understand that.
While faith in public life has always - and will continue to be vital in the public square ---- as I understand it in my faith -- we are all mortal men and women, and admonished to beware of false prophets and those who would trip us up in what is our calling to serve others....
And that is what this campaign is about.....and we have work to do...We must reject the politics of distraction, division and personal destruction. We must reject the invitation to crisis and calamity if we are to KEEP our faith in our God, in our Country, in our fellow citizens...
That's it. Lanther. Rinse. Repeat.
Then tie the Clintons to THEIR negatives and make them one with their own negativity.
Don't take the bait. Not this Candididate, not at this time.
Doing so is to embrace the wholesale destruction of the very core of the Obama campaign:
Positivity and backbone against a stampede of sheeple.
I know, it sounds familiar, our ghosts of campaigns past, but there will be plenty of use for the broad-axe.
Think about it and Take note:
The Clintons, Like Bush and Cheney, have not benefitted politically so much for being fighters as much as it has been their intransigence ---
Their amazing willingness to claim their ground, in their case, even if it is quicksand.
Beyond that, prepare to weather the storm.
Fortified, yes, but On solid, high ground.
Because Remember - A sewer is the last place you want to be in a storm.
Just ask the Clintons.
